Newsletter 11/24/2015

Happy Thanksgiving! I know we are so thankful for our parents that support our classroom and learning. Your child might not tell you enough but they are so grateful for the time you spend shuttling them to activities, supporting them and helping them with their schoolwork. Ms. Wells and Mrs. Farr are so thankful for your children. They provide us with the encouragement to try our best in teaching them, they work their hardest every day, their jokes, and their hugs all make each day in our classrooms amazing!!

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade-Our Balloons

This week we read the book Balloons Over Broadway about the creation of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and how the balloons were started.

We discussed different features of the illustrations and why illustrators might rotate pictures, only show part of a picture, or use different mediums for their drawings. We also used this book to talk about our fiction signposts (make sure to ask your child about these)

Check out our balloon creations:

Chapter 1 Social Studies- Geography of the United States

Before we begin learning about how our country was explored, settled, and declared an independent country we need to learn about how the geography of the United States affects all of these things. In 4th grade you learned about all the unique regions of the United States. We will apply what we know in 5th grade and see how these unique regions affected the founding of our country.

You will explore the difference between relative and absolute locations. Label features on maps and diagrams as well as using latitude and longitude to identify features.

At the end of the chapter we will look at how geography affect one woman's journey to California during the gold rush of 1849.

Powers of Ten...need help??

Here is a are two videos for some extra help with powers of ten.

Helpful hint: if you are multiplying by x10, the numbers shift to the left of the decimal because they are getting bigger. If you are dividing by 10 the numbers shift to the right because they are getting smaller.
